Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Resources

The NRDC has historically opposed the use of biomass for energy as burning trees and other organic matter to produce electricity is dirty and destructive – often creating more carbon pollution than coal, gas, and oil. We do not support claims that biomass is carbon neutral or a clean, renewable energy source. It is not.

Our energy program has been actively working in the US and internationally to end the use of biomass as an energy source and to pressure policy makers to not categorize it as carbon neutral. Please see the links below for an overview of the many ways NRDC is working to protect forests and stop the myths of biomass.
