Book Summary: “Smokescreen” by Chad T. Hanson

The following is a summation of the book, Smokescreen, by Dr. Chad T. Hanson, a forest ecologist and Director and Principal Ecologist with the John Muir Project.

In his book, Dr. Hanson challenges several deeply entrenched assumptions about wildfire management and proposes a shift in how we approach forest ecology and community safety:

1. The “Fire Deficit” vs. “Megafire” Narrative
The Myth:  Large, intense forest fires are unprecedented ecological catastrophes that sterilize the soil and permanently destroy forests.
The Reality:  Hanson argues that historical data shows forests in North America actually have a significant deficit of fire compared to natural historical cycles. Even high-intensity fires are essential, natural ecological disturbances that create rich “snag forest” habitats. These habitats are vital for biodiversity, supporting species like the threatened black-backed woodpecker and spotted owl.

2. The Fallacy of Forest “Thinning”
The Myth:  Logging and commercial “thinning” reduce wildfire risk by removing fuel.
The Reality:  Commercial thinning operations often target larger, more fire-resistant trees and open up the canopy. This allows more wind and sunlight to penetrate the forest, drying out the understory and potentially increasing fire spread and intensity. Hanson highlights that extreme weather and high winds—not forest density—are the true drivers of intense fires.

3. Forests as Carbon Sinks, Not “Carbon Bombs”
The Myth:  Wildfires release catastrophic amounts of carbon, so logging them prevents emissions.
The Reality:  Logging—including post-fire “salvage” logging—immediately releases sequestered carbon into the atmosphere and disrupts natural forest regeneration. In contrast, even burned and dead trees (“snags”) continue to store carbon for decades as they slowly decay, while providing critical habitat and soil stabilization. Hanson emphasizes that keeping forests intact is one of our most effective tools for carbon sequestration.

4. Community-Centric Fire Safety
The Myth:  The best way to protect communities is by managing and logging wildlands miles away.
The Reality:  Hanson argues that focusing resources on backcountry fuel reduction is ineffective. Instead, we must focus directly on the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) through localized home-hardening (e.g., ember-resistant vents, fireproof roofing) and maintaining defensible space directly around structures.
