Notes from the Dioxin Education Committee Meeting – January 12, 2026

The Dioxin Education Committee (DEC) met for the fifth time yesterday at the Southside Community Center. There were 13 in attendance.

We began with a welcome from our chair, Linda Draper, and brief introductions. Then, we decided to start with a presentation from our guest speaker, Joel White, so he would have enough time for both his slides and a question and answer session afterwards. Joel is the Founder of Emergence, a vertically integrated ecological restoration company pioneering a forest-to-farm-to-fork protocol that addresses wildfire, soil collapse, water scarcity, and food insecurity.

Well, the presentation was so compelling that we wound up spending two hours discussing his slide show, while it was in progress, and engaging in a Q & A at the end. The conversations were enlightening and thought provoking. Many good questions were brought up that led to extended discussions. In the future I will send out information about Emergence as it applies to our situation here in South Oroville. In the meantime, there is a Forest Ranch Portable Kiln Firing & Training workshop coming up that the Biochar Coalition is offering. It will be held at 13449 Doe Mill Road in Forest Ranch on February 15th from 7 am to 4 pm. I will send out a flyer about this event in the near future.

We decided to table the rest of the agenda until our next meeting that will be held at the Southside Community Center on Monday, February 9th at 5 pm.

Respectfully yours,
Bill Bynum
Secretary, Dioxin Education Committee
