Our presenter will be Ryan Mae Handy. Ryan will discuss “Building for Wildfires: Rethinking Growth, Land Use and Building Codes in a Fire-Prone World.”
Ryan is an urban planner with Headwaters Economics, an independent, non-profit, research-based group based in Bozeman and Helena, Montana. Her experience in development permitting, workshop facilitation, and running technical assistance programs to help communities plan for the effects of a changing climate supports Headwaters’ wildfire resilience efforts. These efforts are helping over 80 communities enhance their wildfire preparedness.
Thoughtful urban planning can help communities reduce wildfire threats and rebuild more resilient infrastructure after disasters. With a master’s degree in urban and regional planning and certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners, Ryan has a particular interest in watershed-level solutions to problems such as post-fire flooding.
Ryan also has a decade of journalism experience. Drawing on her master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University, she specialized in covering disaster recovery for various publications. A native of Santa Fe, NM, she is passionate about addressing climate change’s impact on the American West. The effect of climate change on the American West has been a passion and common thread through her life and professional career.
